Description

A course offering a practical introduction to weaving on a rigid heddle loom in a friendly, supportive, and structured environment, ideal for beginners as well as those wishing to develop or refresh their textile-making skills while creating their own woven fabrics and unique handmade pieces.

What can students expect?

In friendly and supportive classes, you will learn traditional weaving techniques while developing practical skills and creative confidence. You will be guided through warping, winding, and threading a rigid heddle loom, exploring the importance of tension and the relationship between warp and weft. Using simple finishing techniques such as hem stitching, you will create your own woven fabric in a relaxed and creative learning environment. This course takes place at the St Paul's Learning Centre.

Late starters allowed?

Yes. Learners may join up to Week 3 and will still learn all the essential weaving techniques, although they may produce less fabric. A loom may be borrowed for home practice (subject to a refundable deposit paid directly to the tutor) to help learners catch up and consolidate their skills.

Previous experience required?

No.

What is the progression route?

Returning learners or those with equivalent experience can progress to Level 2, designing and weaving a lambswool (or alternative) scarf while developing advanced patterning, colour, and texture skills.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. Learners supply own yarn. The tutor will advise on what to buy before the start of the course.

Work set between sessions?

No. Unless learners opt to borrow a loom, however this is not a requirement.

What should students bring?

<li>A notebook or phone to make personal notes</li>
<li>Reading glasses if worn </li>

Teaching method/style?

All classes are hands-on, including loom setup, yarn selection, technique practice, and creating finished pieces.

None. Looms are provided for the course.

If we cancel your course

If you cancel

<li>7 days or more before the start date: refund minus a 20% administration fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no refund provided.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
</ul>

Refund processing

<li>Refunds for online or telephone enrolments will be made via the original payment method within 14 days of approval. </li>
<li>If you enrolled in the office, you will need to come in with your payment card to arrange a refund.</li>
</ul>

Transfers

<li>7 days or more before the start date: transfer minus a 10% transfer fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no transfer provided.</li>
<li>All transfers are subject to availability.</li>
<li>Transfers between Language levels may be possible with less than 7 days notice, subject to availability.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
<li>If we cancel your course, and you wish to transfer to another course this will be free of charge.</li>
