This course explores the artistic achievements of the Italian Renaissance, examining the masterpieces of Florence, Rome, and Venice, the influential artists who defined these cultural centres, and the innovations that continue to shape our understanding of art and visual culture.

You will explore the artistic, cultural, and intellectual achievements of the Renaissance, examining the historical, political, and social contexts that shaped this transformative period. The course will investigate major developments in art and science, the flourishing of Renaissance culture in Florence, Rome, and Venice, and the enduring influence of Renaissance ideas on the art world. Through lectures and discussions, participants will gain insights into the key artists, innovations, and achievements that continue to shape our understanding of Western art and culture. Each week will focus on a different theme.

Yes, however it is recommended you join by the second session to make the most of the course.

Learners can enrol on other Art History courses at Stoke Lodge.

Work set between sessions?

Learners will be given a reading list and links to websites for additional reading and research. This is to enhance their knowledge and is optional.

What should students bring?

A notebook to take notes and a folder for the handouts.

PowerPoint presentation, handouts, discussions, analysis of artwork.
